Nanotechnology is a multidisciplinary field, where the analytical chemistry is strongly involved becoming one of the most important and innovative within these field research areas, being key to his role for the development and exploitation of the advantages offered by the nano world. In fact, all new applications that fit expected of nanotechnology need tools and analytical strategies appropriate for the correct characterization of nanomaterials and nanostructures. Also, the use of these nanomaterials can benefit and improve the acquired knowledge to solve problems that had no solution in important areas such as biomedicine, drug development, and the preservation of the environment or the food industry, among others.
On the other hand, and in another order of things, the nano world also offers a new way of thinking and a new alternative to the already existing knowledge. In this sense, is necessary to bring this text disturbing reflection of one of the most important thinkers living in our time, José Luis Sampedro, who in his inaugural recent address as Doctor Honoris Cause from the Universidad de Alcalá said:
Now we have also discovered a new world (…) The world of the small; the ancients distinguished between the macrocosm, which was around the world, and the microcosm, which was the human being, which was considered by its equivalent complexity, in a much smaller physical scale, to the macrocosm. (…) now, for 20 or 30 years, science is driving what I call the nanocosmos, i.e. the cosmos of the nanoctecnia. You know that the nanotecnia is a specialty in parts of physics, biology and chemistry, which faces, not with the overwhelming and dazzling magnitude of the magnificently large stars but with amazing seduction of the infinitely small. (…)The only thing that works quickly and can take us forward is the Science. And there it is, for me, the future reference. Because the road of the infinitely small we will arrive to love LIFE… the benchmark total.
Serve these beautiful words not only for the seduction, but also to contextualise this Sixth Edition on Analytical Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (VI NyNA, 2013) to be held in the incomparable setting of the College of San Ildefonso of the University of Alcalá, world heritage, on 8 and 9 July 2013. After the success of five previous editions (Córdoba, Tarragona, Oviedo, Zaragoza and Toledo), this Sixth Edition comes to continue a tradition of high scientific quality well established in our country, looking for also encourage the participation of experts from different areas of Analytical Chemistry and foster multidisciplinary research within a national and international context.
Finally, after closing the VI NYNA 2013 event, I would like to invite everyone to join us in the II Workshop on "Novel technologies for the development of advanced platforms for sensing and bio-sensing", organized by AVANSENS Research Group from Research Program of the Comunity of Madrid.
